Ways to Get Involved in Your Community This Holiday Season
While the holidays are, for many people, about spending time with family and giving gifts to those you love, there are lots of residents right in our community who aren’t so lucky. If you want to start a new tradition of donating your time to help community members in need, here are some great ways to get involved in the community this holiday season.
The Toys for Tots program has been around since 1947, and it has distributed more than 548 million toys to children in need. To get involved with this great organization, start collecting toys for children in the area, then locate a hub in your area where you can drop them off.
Contact the local branch of the Salvation Army to support an “angel” in the Reston area, or donate your time to distribute gifts and holiday meals to participating families. You could make a difference in providing a holiday celebration for a family in need.
Support Our Troops Care Packages
Sadly, many of our deployed troops can’t be with their families during the holiday season. Show them how thankful you are for their service by preparing a care package full of essentials, or purchase gift cards so that they can talk to their families back home via satellite.
Humane Society of Fairfax County
Many area shelter pets are still homeless for the holidays. Volunteer your time or resources to making a donation, walking dogs, spending time with the animals at the shelter or purchasing items for the animals from the shelter’s Wish List.
This organization provides food, shelter, affordable housing, quality childcare, and other human services for families in need right in your community. Make a donation to this incredible cause, or participate in their seasonal events, such as the Winter Coat Drive or Gifts for Kids Drive.
